Grounding in a chaotic world
Oracle card “Get Grounded” from Jamie Roth’s Oracle Card deck Mind, Body, and Spirit.
In the fast-paced, ever-changing world, that is especially in upheaval at this time, staying grounded is essential for our overall well-being. To be grounded means to feel stable, present, and connected to both our physical body and the earth beneath us. Without this sense of grounding, we may feel anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected from reality, as though we are floating without direction.
Grounding is not just about physical and emotional stability; it also plays a crucial role in spiritual well-being. When we are ungrounded, we may become overly absorbed in abstract spiritual concepts, experiencing confusion, dissociation, or even spiritual psychosis—losing touch with reality in an attempt to connect with higher realms. By anchoring ourselves in the present moment and maintaining a strong foundation through grounding practices, we create a safe and balanced space for spiritual exploration without losing our sense of self.
What can I do to increase being grounded?
The earth itself provides endless opportunities for grounding.
Walking barefoot on the soil, grass, or sand allows us to absorb the earth’s natural energy, creating a direct exchange between our body and the planet.
Spending time in nature, whether through hiking, gardening, or simply sitting under a tree, fosters a deep sense of stability and reminds us of our connection to something greater. The earth’s rhythms are steady and unwavering, and when we attune ourselves to them, we cultivate inner peace and resilience.
Another powerful way to enhance grounding is through mindful practices that bring awareness to the present moment. You can deeply tap into your senses as a mindful practice. Such as listing the things you 1.see, 2.smell, 3.hear 4.feel 5.taste.
Breathing deeply, feeling the weight of our body against the ground, and engaging in movement-based practices such as Goddess Flow or tai chi and dance help to bring our energy downward, anchoring us in the here and now.
What are the benefits of being grounded?
When we are grounded, we move through life with greater ease and clarity. Challenges feel more manageable, emotions become more balanced, and we develop a stronger sense of trust in ourselves and the universe. In a world that often pulls us in multiple directions, taking the time to ground ourselves is not just beneficial—it is essential. By cultivating a strong foundation through the root chakra and our connection to the earth, we create the stability needed to grow, heal, and thrive in all aspects of our lives.
Chakras and Grounding
Another way to explore grounding, is by learning about the Chakra system, which originates from ancient Indian spiritual traditions, particularly within Hinduism and Buddhism. The concept of chakras can be traced back to early texts such as the Vedas, which date over 3,000 years ago. It describes energy centers in the body that influence physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Over time, the chakra system has been integrated into various healing and spiritual practices worldwide, blending with modern energy work and holistic healing modalities.
The root chakra, or Muladhara, is located at the base of the spine and serves as the foundation of our entire energetic system. It governs our sense of security, stability, and survival. When this chakra is balanced, we feel safe in our environment, confident in our ability to meet life's challenges, and deeply connected to the physical world. However, when it is blocked or imbalanced, we may experience fear, restlessness, and a lack of belonging. Because this chakra is associated with the earth element, connecting with the natural world is one of the most effective ways to restore harmony and feel rooted in our existence.
Ways to nourish the Root chakra are by eating nourishing, root-based foods, such as carrots and beets. Wearing the color red, and using red light therapy can also be helpful. Chanting “Om Lam” is also very grounding.
While I consider grounding a physical process, it it about processing emotions and energy through the energetic system, into the body creating an experience of wholeness of Mind-Body-Spirit.
These chaotic times will require you to practice grounding often.
Stay well friends!
